Often as not they are applied in a frenzy of colour and brushstrokes and are  little more than dabs of colour. But the results are spectacular and it is this highly energised whirlwind style painting. Adebanji is based in London and is a provisional member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters

Denise Allen
In my studies of waves crashing I believe that the scale and shape of my canvases should match the subject matter. That is why many of the works on show are large, long and narrow. Ideally, and if they would sell, I would paint even larger pictures. Although I have always had a passion for art and initially was attracted to painting wildlife, my love of the sea was fostered while living in Bermuda. On returning to the UK I help found the gallery Artshed, but gave up my share to concentrate on my own acrylics, watercolours and oils and to establish the painting holidays I still run in Menorca. Today, the holiday island remains an important source of inspiration, though others include the craggy coasts and wild seas of Cornwall and Northumberland. I am constantly inspired by the world around me, and by the magic of applying paint on the surface.

Frank Clarke

It was then that he made a most unusual discovery:  "No one was prepared to show him the basics of painting."  Having read every art instruction book he could get his hands on Frank came to the conclusion that they all seemed to start at Chapter 4 making the assumption that he had some prior knowledge of painting which of course he did not. It was then that Frank decided to write these missing chapters and it worked ....Simply Painting was born. The first book became a best seller, outselling all other art teaching books combined in it's first year in Ireland. Chris is exhilarated by colour and surface and enjoys creating textured layers of dry-brushed colour that allow hints of complementary hue to glow through, thus creating an exciting surface of scattered, broken colour. He specialises in landscape subjects, exploring the themes of man-made alongside the organic: buildings by water; structure emerging from a rocky cliff, sometimes with figures contributing to this theme, inhabiting the middle ground between buidings and the wildness of nature. Chris is inspired by downland, coastal scenes of the Uk and the Mediternean, cafe life and townscapes. Chris was awarded the prestigious F DONALD BLAKE AWARD for a contemporary watercolour by the LINCOLN JOYCE gallery in 2006 at the RI spring exhibition and also THE MATT BRUCE MEMORIAL AWARD for light and colour at the 2007 RI exhibition

Noel Gregory
Noel Gregory was born in Ealing England on Christmas Day 1944 and moved to Buckinghamshire in the early fifties. His interests were always directed to the arts rather than academic subjects and his acceptance into High Wycombe College of Art in 1960, was the start of four years training for the National Diploma in Design and Art Teachers. Having finished his training with the Art Teachers Diploma in Bournemouth Noel then taught painting at Newlands Park teacher training college.

He then started picture restoring and for over twenty five years dealt with what was to become the huge growth market of Victorian Water Colours, using his own art gallery in Farnham Common Buckinghamshire for this purpose. In the late 1980's the economic problems of investment painting, antiques and the housing markets were such that to continue in the art field he started painting and producing images and prints to be sold in the gallery. The interest produced in the these works was sufficient to promote them at fine art shows, Ideal Home Exhibitions and craft fairs and to develop a large American market with the juried street fairs of the Sunshine Trail in Florida and Alabama. He is now running art courses in Bedar, Almeria in Southern Spain where he now lives.

Ron Gribble
Ron was born in Te Kuiti in 1949. Ron began his art career when his art teacher “bullied him into painting” during his School Certificate year. He trained as a commercial artist, but loves most of all to paint the natural landscape, as God created it, but in a bold, painterly style. It should look at its best when viewed from four to six metres away. Oils would be his medium of choice, but he has won awards in Acrylics, Water Colours as well as Oils. He has won or been placed in thirteen national art competitions since he began painting seriously in 1978.

His paintings have been reproduced in the form of hand signed limited edition prints, place- mats, coasters, and calendars. As the result of successful exhibitions, Ron’s work can be found in many countries in the world. Ron is the author of an instructional video, “Painting in Oils, with Ron Gribble.” This has sold many copies in his native New Zealand, and under license in the U.K. and Australia. He has, as a result, become a sought after tutor, and judge.

Max Hale
Born in Bushey, Herts in 1954 I was brought up in Harrow, Middlesex and attended Harrow School of Art where I gained a Fine Art degree, I had some wonderful tuition from one particular tutor, Ken Howard OBE RA. My qualification earned me a place as apprentice illustrator in a London studio working on books and magazines often with incredibly short deadlines. After three years I decided that my true aspirations weren't being met and I found a way back into the fine art scene. Painting solidly alone and with various art groups I gained valuable experience. Two tutors stand out for me; Denis Syrett a former President of the ROI and Rod Hamer a brilliant but modest artist and excellent jazz trumpeter. My exhibiting was becoming more fruitful and moving from watercolour to oil, acrylic back to dry mediums I found I could develop my own styles which have become looser and more expressive.
Out of London to Buckinghamshire in 1978 then to Wiltshire in 2008. Success in my own work led naturally to teaching art to adults in all forms, writing for magazines, demonstrating and working as reviewer for art materials.

Steve Hall
At about the time of the millennium Steve Hall first became aware of the work of Edward Wesson . Here was some one who had managed to put aside all the verbal clutter about the medium of watercolour and put down on paper what he observed in as simple and honest fashion as was possible. Sadly Ted Wesson is no longer with us, however he was such a prolific painter and demonstrator that literally thousands of his paintings are still in existence and regularly appear in both galleries and auctions.Other artists with a similar honest approach to the medium have also influenced Steves style and approach to painting including Edward Seago, Jack Merriott, James Fletcher-Watson and lately John Yardley, with whom he had the pleasure to paint at Dedham Hall.So join with him and explore all that is good about fresh watercolour. It is to embark on a journey that is unending and at times full of frustration and pitfalls yet, for the determined traveller, one that can be so rewarding.

James Horton PRBA
On Leaving the Royal College of Art in 1974 James Horton has pursued a career as a professional Painter. A few years after leaving the RCA he was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists.
The constant theme in his work is working from life, whether portrait, landscape or interiors. Much of what he does centres around travelling and working on location. Anything that is produced on the spot is rarely adjusted back in the studio, preserving the essence of a time and a place. However, very often work made direct from life will provide the basis for producing larger scale paintings done in the studio.
James Horton has always been an active portrait painter but believes likeJohn Singer Sargent that to be a good portrait painter one should produce a variety of work made from life. He works mainly in oil and watercolour but also in pastel, one of his books being 'Pastel Techniques'. Apart from his own books, James Horton has written numerous articles for a variety of magazines and his work is also featured in many other books and articles. As a teacher he taught part- time in several different art schools until 1990 and now has occasional classes in his studio along the lines of the old atelier system where students can study with a working painter. In 2002 he accompanied HRH Prince Charles with ' The friends of Mount Athos' as artist in residence with a special brief to draw and paint the monastery architecture. Currently he works a great deal in India and since 2000 he has been taking groups to India and also accompanies painting groups to other locations that include Tuscany, Venice, North Africa and Jordan.

Patrick Howe
Patrick Howe had his first one person show in the lobby of a bank show at age 15. Then later, after art school, he tried to make it as an artist but ‘reality’ soon set in, so he worked during the day and painted at night. Eventually he worked in the advertising field for many years and learned many of the skills that most artists lack, such as marketing, public relations, and branding. But in 2002 he left that and returned to painting full time. In 2004 the Patrick Howe Gallery opened in Seattle, where he shows his art, hold classes, and paints.

David Howell
David Howell was born in 1939 and is based at his studio in North Yorkshire, England.  His  paintings are primarily of landscape and marine subjects, but he  is also well known for his Equestrian racing pictures.  He works in watercolour, oils and pastels, and is a regular exhibitor at both national level and with regional galleries in the UK, USA, the Middle East and Australia and is the current President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. David's approach to painting is very much concerned with capturing atmosphere and a sense of time and place but above all he is concerned with producing good paintings rather than topographical accuracy.  He works outside as much as possible and over the years has travelled widely and he is still just as likely to be found sitting by a canal in Venice as dragging an easel through the Arabian desert.  His paintings hang in corporate and private collections in diverse locations that range from city boardrooms to royal palaces and he is currently the President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.

Erik Koeppel
Erik Koeppel (b.1980)
is a traditional New England based landscape painter who has become a leader in the revival of the techniques and philosophy of the Hudson River School. Koeppel studied extensively in museums, and in nature to arrive at the determination that the powerful methods of the masters, are in fact an urgently needed voice in contemporary culture. In mastering these techniques, this assertion has been proven by the extensive success his work has found nationwide, in the form of awards, publications, academic recognition, exhibitions, and collectability. His highly naturalistic paintings are created without the use of photography.

Hazel Lale
Hazel's work is strongly influenced by her travels — the bustle and colours of the souks of Marrakesh... the temples and forests of India... the savannahs and wildlife of Africa... the cafes and milongas of Buenos Aires... the familiar seascapes of our island's edge — places that become a part of the weave of dreams and memory she draws on. She has exhibited in many one-woman shows, in the U.K. and internationally. Among the exciting things that have happened to her was a recent invitation to show alongside an established fashion designer during the London Fashion Week at the Metropolitan Hotel, Park Lane. This is the first time that London Fashion Week has invited an artist to exhibit. For the past few years Hazel has exhibited in a prestigious San Francisco Gallery, which has led to several major international commissions.

Ian McManus
I was born in a small village just outside Cambridge, and while at school, the only subject I was really interested in was art, particularly relief sculpture. I have done a variety of jobs throughout my life, none of which fulfil the creative side of my nature, and that’s probably why thirty years or so after leaving school, I thought I’d take up art again. I began with acrylics and then moved on to oils, but I was never happy with my efforts. I realised I needed to learn the art of painting from the beginning again and enrolled in an art course at the local college. However, the only course available was for watercolour, so I thought I’d give it a go! From there on I was hooked on watercolour and I now paint exclusively in that medium. My style is direct application of paint with no overlay of washes as I believe this gives the finished painting the transparency so desired by many watercolour artists. I believe that anyone who is passionate enough about painting can learn to paint. It’s a continual learning experience, but very rewarding when it all comes together and you finish up with a painting you’re happy with. I run a weekly watercolour class, and also do occasional day workshops for art groups. My subjects are taken from everyday life, from the UK to France, Spain, Greece – anywhere there’s a moment to be captured in watercolour.

She drew as a child and, aged about twelve, became conscious that she was already on the portraiture road.  Since then she has continued without break doing commissions but always tempering this work with self-generated and non-commissioned projects. The latter are her 'pickups' - faces she sees and pounces on to sit for her.

David Norman

David Norman is a prominent English watercolourist who divides his time between studios in Devon and in the Dordogne. His watercolours are figurative and underpinned by a strong sense of draughtsmanship, a legacy from a rigorous training in architectural drawing and rendering. Over the years his palette has become more and more refined as he tries to simplify and justify his paintings in terms of tone and atmosphere alone. David has had many one man exhibitions and his paintings are in collections throughout Europe, America, and the Far East. He is the author of two books on watercolour painting "The Complete Watercolourist" and "Watercolour, Artists Questions Answered"   David Norman writes: Towards Narrative Painting. The inspiration for the majority of my work comes from a sometimes accidental or sudden glimpse of the subject matter whether a seascape or townscape. The time of day,the position of the sun, the weather, all have a part to play in this regard however the most important factor for me is the possibility of a story behind the image and this narrative thread stays with me and grows with the painting and, in a way, informs the outcome and influences the atmosphere of the finished work. My passion for capturing the effects of light is, I hope, obvious in the scenes of the towns and harbours which I have painted during my time spent in Europe and it is the same with the paintings completed in England, influenced by the South coast and living most of my life in Devon. It is perhaps a romantic notion but imagining a story within the painting I hope influences the finished work Perhaps the spectator can find their own interpretation, and weave their own story into my paintings.

Byron Pickering
The path to the beach was well worn in l971 when Byron Pickering made his home on the Oregon Coast. His easel became a permanent fixture in the corner of the living room. His understanding of surf action is the product of this time of observation, and is the mental resource from which he paints. After a year of intense practice, Byron was given his first one-person showing in a coastal gallery.   Many sold-out shows followed.   The acceptance of his work by an enthusiastic public has been the most rewarding part of his art journey. In 1981, he and his family opened "Pickering Studio," a gallery of art and antiques. Painting for the gallery and an annual series of workshops occupied the following thirteen years. In September 2000, Byron was honored as a recipient of one of the ten prestigious awards given at the Salon d'Automne International Art competition in Montreal, Canada.

He now paints with equal facility in both watercolour and oil and has greatly extended his range of subject matter. Although he has remained a figurative artist, his oils exploit the full potential of the texture of the paint and his aim remains to get a painterly image, which captures the essence of the subject. Andrew is well known for his loose, fresh approach to watercolour and the simplicity of his style has made him much in demand as a tutor in this medium. He has had 15 one-man exhibitions since 1980 and contributed to numerous mixed shows. He is a frequent art club demonstrator and workshop/painting holiday tutor. Andrew's pictures are in many private collections in Britain as well as Canada, Holland, North America, New Zealand, Slovakia and Australia.

Richard Rogers
Born in Kyogle, New South Wales in 1954, Richard Rogers is known for iconic Australian imagery and the vibrancy of his painting style. His art education has been largely informal. During the 1980's he learnt the technique of batik from South Australian artist Jeremy Keyte, which led to his first solo exhibition, held at the Underground Gallery in Coober Pedy in 1985. Dissatisfied with the colour fastness of the dyes he used, he switched to painting with more traditional mediums, watercolour, acrylics.and oils. He now paints primarily with acrylics. Meeting and spending time with an aboriginal artist, John Evans, inspired a desire to create an art style that is identifiably Australian, one that combines the rhythm, patterns and colour of indigenous art with Europeon art techniques. Richard's last exhibition sold completely and his work has been featured in the Artists Palette and Australian Artist magazines. His paintings are found in collections throughout Australia and overseas.

Cesar Santos
In his early childhood in Cuba, Cesar, always interested in creative arts, built mud sculptures in the rain and used his imagination to invent toys. At the age of 12, after immigrating with his family to Miami, he dreamed of a future as an artist. Even while participating in the sport of boxing and attending a magnet high school for architecture, his first love was always fine art. After attending art school and learning a contemporary view of post-impressionistic principles, Cesar wanted to understand the scientific aspects of painting, so he set off to the Angel Academy in Florence to learn more. He took that knowledge and, combining it with what he had learned earlier, developed his own unique personal style that reflects both modernism and traditionalism.

Fraer Scarfe
After leaving school and completing a foundation course in Art and Design, Fraser set about creating a series of paintings based upon the Lincolnshire countryside as he viewed it, literally from his own doorstep. This series of 25 works formed the basis of Frasers first solo exhibition 'Lincolnshire' in the summer of 2007 and helped to generate a new interest in Landscape art within the county. Since this exhibition Fraser has continued to paint the Lincolnshire landscape, exploring new areas of interest and new and exiting viewpoints. After moving his studio to Lincoln at the end of 2007, Fraser began looking for a new challenge that would connect him with the history and culture of the city itself and at the start of 2008 Fraser was awarded the title of  'Artist in Residence' at Lincoln's famous Cathedral.
As artist in residence Fraser's aim is to get as many people within the county involved with art as possible. 2009 will see two large community art projects, organised by Fraser, taking place in Lincolnshire that aim to do just that. The residency also promises exiting new directions for Fraser's own work, as he interprets an entirely new subject matter. Fraser's landscape work has resulted in him being award the title of SAA  'Artist of the Year' for 2008. Only just starting his career, Fraser Scarfe promises to be an exiting talent to watch out for in the future.

Reg Siger
Reg Siger is a self-taught artist who, for the last 30 years has specialised in depicting old cottages, farmhouses, village and town scenes. Reg's work concentrates on the historical aspect of the subjects, reflecting his fascination for old architecture. His paintings rarely feature cars, traffic signs or any other modern paraphernalia, giving the scenes a flavour of times gone by. He exhibits mostly in East Anglia, UK, in churches, church halls and village hall art shows, plus a few selected craft fairs. His working technique is unorthodox (so they say!) and consists of a strong drawing executed with a brush and black waterproof ink, which is then filled with acrylic paints. Reg seems to be one of the very few artists painting rainy scenes. Some of these are almost colourless as he uses only three shades mixed to produce interesting greyish tones, giving these paintings a lot of atmosphere. He does take commissions if the subject is compatible with his style of work.

Hazel Soan
Hazel was born in Woking and grew up in Surrey. From her teens she knew she wished to pursue an artistic career but had no knowledge of living artists. It was only at Art College that she realized it was possible to make a life out of painting. Within a year of her graduation she was earning her living by her paintings and soon had her first show in London, where her watercolours sold out in the opening hour. She followed this with regular exhibitions, heeding the advice of one of her College lecturers: ‘Always has an exhibition on the horizon’. Since then she has had many successful solo and mixed shows mostly in London but also as far afield as Venezuela and Zimbabwe. She has a light-filled studio and gallery in West London and a studio in Cape Town, and has travelled widely throughout the world, especially in Southern Africa.

Hazel always loved the written word and began writing articles and books about painting in the 1990’s. Analyzing visual practice became an interesting challenge. She has now written 10 books, mostly on watercolour, almost all published by HarperCollins. She currently writes a bi-monthly article for ‘Kunst for Alle’, one of Norway’s leading Art magazines and contributes articles to magazines, such as ‘The Artist’ and ‘Leisure Painter’.

In 1996, with a desire to communicate her passion to a wider audience, Hazel took up the offer of her own television series ‘Splash of Colour’ with Anglia TV. This propelled her into the public eye and later brought her the role as an Art Expert on Channnel 4’s ever popular painting programme ‘Watercolour Challenge’. Her natural enthusiasm and engaging personality won the hearts of millions of viewers and her talents as a communicator made her much in demand for lectures, workshops, painting holidays and demonstrations, taking her from the QE2 to the Kalahari Desert..

Tricia Taylor
Tricia saya 'The beauty and serenity of creation is what draws me to paint.  I love to capture the feel of the moment whether that is the warmth of the light, the velvet feel of a petal or the fold of a cloth. As a seascape artist I enjoy capturing the movement of the waves and the play of light on the sand. There is something quite spiritual and musical in the ocean. It is the light, the rhythm and the emotion that entices me to paint no matter what the subject. I am a Master Pastellist with the Pastel Society of Australia since 2010. The way the pastel becomes your brush and the paper your pallet is immediate and exciting to paint with. The subtle colour effects you can gain by glazing one colour over another gives a great depth to the artwork. I have won awards in the areas of flower, still life, portraits, landscapes and seascapes. However seascapes are my passion. My artwork can be seen at Seaview Gallery Moffat Beach Queensland 7 days a week. Being on duty at the gallery twice a month feel free to drop in and have a chat!'
